What's Good About the Blues

Have you ever wondered why Mother Nature chose the colour blue to be the most dominant colour on our planet?

Perhaps at some time you’ve found yourself being particularly drawn to absorbing more of the colour blue than usual. You may have just found yourself staring at the ocean, or gazing up at a brilliant blue sky. And after a while you’ve felt a whole lot better.

Maybe you have been having trouble communicating your needs to others, feel that you’re stuck creatively, or perhaps you are just feeling stressed or hot and bothered and want more peace in your life.

Blue is Such a Cool Colour

Blue is a cool and calming colour that relates to self expression, purity, creativity, truth and spiritual awareness. Its peaceful and soothing energy is all about bringing us a greater connection with our cosmic selves.

Blue is associated with the throat chakra that is energised by this colour. There are seven chakras (or wheels of energy) in the human body from the base of the spine to above the crown of the head.

The throat chakra is the fifth chakra and is located in the middle of the throat area. It is linked to our ability to communicate well and to artistic expression and a calm and peaceful state of being. The Sanskrit word for this Chakra is Vishuddha which means purification.

The Throat Chakra affects the throat, lungs and the endocrine gland as well as the upper respiratory tract.

What Blue Can Do for You

With its ability to calm and relax the nervous system the colour blue can be helpful for those suffering from high blood pressure and asthma and other respiratory disorders that have been aggravated by stress.

Being a cool colour blue is also useful for healing burns and calming down stress related skin conditions. Blue in a bedroom can help to reduce insomnia and it is also useful for shock and fevers. With its affect on the throat chakra blue can also improve various conditions of the throat and thyroid gland and is helpful for eye and ear problems as well. It can alleviate pain (both physical and emotional) and reduce bleeding. Blue has also been said to be beneficial in the treatment of dysentery.

Feeling Blue

If we’re feeling sad we often use the phrase ‘I was feeling blue’. But where does this come from since the colour blue is all about peace, relaxation and good communication?

There was an old custom with sailing ships that if they lost their captain or any of their officers during the ship’s voyage, a blue flag would be put up and a blue band painted along the entire hull of the ship when she returned to her home port.

Another possible connection to blue being sad may have come from Greek mythology.

We intuitively associate water with the colour blue. No doubt because so much of our planet is covered in blue water. In Greek mythology blue was related to water as in rain or storms. If the God Zeus was feeling sad he made rain and when he was angry he would create a storm.

When the Blues are Bad

Nature in her great wisdom has created colours in our world in perfect balance. But if for some reason we end up absorbing too much a particular colour, perhaps by deliberately surrounding ourselves with too much of it, without getting a balance in our lives of other colours, there is a possibility we can begin to experience some negative aspects of a particular colour.

The negative side of blue is untrustworthiness, unfaithfulness, self-righteousness and coldness.

Blue Stones

Wearing or holding blue stones can be helpful in balancing the body, mind and emotions with their blue energy.

Stones such as Aquamarine, Turquoise, Tourmaline and Chalcedony contain the blue vibration and can help bring about a peaceful and serene state of being, improve creativity and communication and bring a greater connection to our higher selves. They also offer a field of protection and assist with creating a more positive way of being.

Medical conditions that may respond positively to the blue vibration can also improve by wearing one of these stones.

Mother Nature certainly got it right when she painted our world with so much blue. Perhaps she hoped by surrounding us with so much of this cool, gentle and relaxing colour that it would help to bring a peaceful world.
